Sunday 16th August Long Ride

Always in search of new lanes the long ride yet again headed East with the aim of having breakfast at “Jam Jar Kitchen” in Crantock. I met Phil, Dale, Ian S and Ben ( good to see Ben back riding with the Wheelers ) at the Norway and we chose a route that would revisit the lanes around Truro that we’d been introduced to on the Dave Bennett Memorial Ride in June. Via Penwethers Lane we joined the cycle path off Malabar Rd near Treliske and then via New Mill we rode a network of “rarely ridden” lanes all the way to Shortlanesend where we hooked up with Julian.

From there we went to Goonhavern and by some “new lanes” en route to Hendra and Cubert then on to Crantock and the cafe.
The “Jam Jar Kitchen” has always been a favourite with the long ride – however we were disappointed to see that its good reputation has now spread and all the tables in the courtyard were full! 😱 Fortunately there was a bench against a wall along with three small tables adjacent to the quiet road and, if we didn’t mind a short wait, they would take our orders for breakfast. The short wait turned into an hour! 🥱 However the food, when it finally came, was absolutely delicious and to quell any lingering annoyance about the delay they delivered us a second round of coffees on the house. To be honest it was very pleasant relaxing break. Highly recommended- but book in advance! Unfortunately there was a little more delay later as we headed to St Enoder when Dale was unfortunate enough to have two punctures in fast succession.

We were getting ready for refreshments by the time we reached Ruan Lanihorne but it appears the pub is now permanently closed. Fortunately the “Roseland Inn” was only a short distance further on and, as always, it ticked all the boxes! It was very very difficult to leave. 🤪🤣☀️☀️🍻 We gave ourselves plenty of time this week for the ferry as Dale all but missed it last week.😂

It’s always difficult cycling past the “Old Quay Inn” on a warm sunny afternoon and, as it seemed another drink wouldn’t be out of order, we stopped. Bizarrely the pub had none of its dispensing apparatus in operation due to an electrical glitch and could only offer bottled lager. We moved on.
As the ride had started at the Norway Inn it seemed appropriate to end it there. We sat outside and watched the steady stream of noisy traffic passing by. Probably the reason why we’ve never considered stopping there before.

A ride of approximately 60 miles for me with about 100ft of climb per mile and in great company. We had comments about the climbs but no complaints which means the Long Ride can go anywhere ⛰️ 💪 well, within reason.
9.5 hrs with just 4.5 hrs of cycling for me. 🤣

There was sadly a lack of women on this ride. We’d love you to join us – it was under 13mph this week.
