Drym? Sunday ride 20 June 2021

We met at HQ as usual, sorted our groups out, and welcomed a new rider Andrew, who opted to go with Trevor’s group as he was unsure of where he fitted in group wise. Our destination after much debate, as is our way, was to be Woodland Kitchen Garden (don’t tell Jan Ed) out near Townsend, near Drym, you know, says Dean. How do we get there? well we go through Drym! Where’s that was the reply. Well we fork right at Nancegollan. O.K. so far. Off on the well travelled route Halvasso Porkellis – you all know. Just after Porkellis we came across Caroline and Victor out for their socially distanced ride (from us, not from each other Ed). So on to Nancegollan and fork right we did – out to not Tehidy woods but Crenver Grove part of the Clowance estate (sorry Damien), where we turned left towards Drym, Leedstown and on towards Townsend, and our destination. To say it was busy would be an understatement but with cunning and luck we managed to requisition two tables and settled, then up to order. It was a long wait. Past rides were discussed; sailing exploits and salty sea dog tales were delivered; still we waited, and watched as our other table was served. Humm, oh well. The development of waterproof clothing was discussed; the toughness of previous generations and how soft we are. Being warm and dry is taken for granted, not like the old days when rounding the Horn or cycling the pre and post war tours of France (first world war that is) oh! How soft we have become. At last we were served. We all decided we need to return when they are less busy before passing judgement (Amanda’s coffee rating didn’t even make the table of grades, described as a bit of coffee diluted with scalding water, a fact verified by Dave when the waitress tried and poured his coffee down his arm.) We returned via StHilary and Porthleven, which was Busy Busy – where do all the people come from.
Rain clouds were continuously with and about us but apart from a few spits didn’t dampen our spirits.
A very pleasant ride and good company
Just short of the magic 50 miles so no medals for us.
The cast were Adrian just back from the Scottish isles, Damien just back from Derbyshire. John and Dean all the way from Falmouth NZ Dave on loan from Helston. And the three ladies Amanda, Sarah and Teresa who did their best to keep us under control, and yours truly.
