Social climbers

The long ride is not all about distance – it’s also about time. On Sunday the 9th we went to the Lizard and stopped at the Holy Mackerel cafe in Helford for an early coffee. It was around 11:00 am and we’d been going for around two hours – mostly uphill! Our average speed wasn’t very much at all. And we were just a few miles from HQ as the crow flys. Crows are inherently lazy and as a result they miss out on quite a lot in life. The surprising thing was the lack of dissent amongst the small group, Amanda, Ian, Phil and Steve Pond, even though the amount of descent was considerable. It was a challenging ride for anyone but more so for Steve who isn’t really built for climbing – though he didn’t complain once. I don’t record rides often these days but he told me we’d climbed about 1800 metres 😜!

Our main refuelling stop was Roskilly’s. The most popular choice was the fish goujon sandwich and I was a little uncertain of my own selection – the smoked brisket sandwich. I went to change my order but gave up realising that it might create a little confusion. Pleased I didn’t – my beef sandwich was delicious.

By common agreement we chose a slightly less demanding route home and though we lost Phil and Amanda in Longdowns, each having other commitments, three of us returned to the Lockdown Inn and availed of the restorative powers of Spingo 😜🚴🏼‍♂️🍻😀
